ORDER OF ABROGATION in the Koran
The Koran is normally printed in an
order that starts with the longest chapters (Surah) and ends with the
shortest chapter. There are conflicting verses within the Koran and
Islamic scholars explain this by saying the verses that were written last supersede
or abrogate the earlier version. Therefore, it is necessary to know
the chronological order of the chapters. For example, Chapter 96 was
written first. Therefore if there are any verses that contradict
what is written in chapter 96, that verse abrogates what is written in
Surah 96. The chart below shows the chronological order for each
Surah and the order that it is traditionally printed. Notice that Surah 9
was the next to the last Surah to be written. Therefore, it
supersedes everything before it. Surah 9 is one of the most violent
Surahs in the Koran.
